While I'm glad that photography can be enjoyed as a purely aesthetic pursuit, Mariella Furrer’s project "My Piece of Sky" reminds me of the vital role photography has to play in exposing and raising awareness about suffering and injustice in the world – in this case, child abuse in South Africa. Furrer's project is possibly the most powerful and moving piece of social documentary photography I have encountered.
